PML-N leadership tender apology to nation: Karia

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira on Tuesday asked the PML-N leadership to tender apology to the nation and the President for `robbing’ the people’s mandate in 1990 elections.
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leadership should do penance by tendering apology before the nation and the President, he added.
Today, the doors have been closed for poll rigging and no one can win elections on the basis of false propaganda and agencies’ support, said the Information Minister, while addressing a news conference here.
What has been depicted from the court verdict is just a small chapter of the condemnable propaganda as various other characters and their wrongdoings are yet to be exposed, he added.
The Informarion Minister said that the court verdict had vindicated Shaheed Benazir Bhutto in her grave as all her statements proved true, including the formation of government by stealing the people’s mandate.
The Information Minister said that the history had regurgitated the truth by admitting the fact that the people’s mandate was robbed in 1990 but on the other side of the coin, the sinners were terming it a propaganda.
He said that some people were demanding establishment of a judicial or UN commission, while others claimed to accept the verdict but not probe through the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
It is the court, not the government, which has called for investigation by the FIA, he added.
Kaira recalled Benazir Bhutto’s statement of receiving threats from the agencies of killing her jailed husband if she refused to accept the then government.
He said that the court verdict had proved the robbery of people’s mandate, but the status of the government formed on the basis of rigging was yet to be decided.
He said that the foundation of the Islami Jamhuri Ittehad was laid in 1986 when an army-led cell started gathering like-minded people and it was formally launched by General Hameed Gul after the death of Zia-ul-Haq.
The Information Minister said that the PPP’s political adversaries had been coming into power using propaganda and unconstitutional tactics but the party had always banked on the people’s mandate despite conspiracies.
He said that Ishaq Khan toppled the Benazir government and his action was ratified by the then Chief Justice of Lahore High Court Rafiq Tarar, who in return was later made the president of the country.
The minister also quoted the news items of 1990s containing BB’s statements on the establishment of a cell at the President House to rig the polls and IJI’s victory in 105 seats, several of them with 100 percent turnout, proved that fact.
Kaira mentioned a white paper issued by Shaheed Benazir Bhutto regarding the tactics used for rigging the polls and clarified that the PPP had nothing to do with Asghar Khan’s petition as it was moved after losing elections.
He said in 1990, some bogus outfits were formed like Tehrik-e- Naujawanan-e-Pakistan, Tehrik-e-Islah-i-Muaashra, Pakistan Voters Forum and Tehrik-e-Istihkam-e-Pakistan to play their role in the poll- rigging.
The minister said that the PPP had tendered apology to the people for the mistakes, it had not committed.
“We apologized to the people of Balochistan for the mistakes committed by the others,” he added.
The Information Minister expressed surprise over the statement of PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif and others demanding establishment of a commission or investigations by the United Nations.
Replying to a question, he said that the action against elements involved in misusing the public money would be taken according to the Constitution and the law.
About Yunus Habib, he said that Mian Nawaz Shairf had granted him a licence of Mehran Bank as a gift to hatch a conspiracy against the PPP.
He regretted that the government, formed as a consequence of the rigged elections, instituted cases against Shaheed BB and Asif Ali Zardari.
Answering a question, Kaira said the President was neutral and it was not fair to expect from him to be a non-political entity.
“The President is a part of the Parliament, which is the product of political and democratic process,” he said and advised the PML-N leadership to respect the office of the President.
Kaira said that even the PPP Prime Minister was also neutral in his approach as the government had released funds to the opposition MPs on equal basis, besides giving them full respect.
