PPP taking solid steps to strengthen democracy: Kaira

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira on Wednesday said that the PPP was taking steps to strengthen democracy in the country.
Talking to PTV, the Information Minister said that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), which enjoyed popularity at the grassroots level, had always worked for strengthening democracy in order to make the country  as per the visions of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
He said that Taliban were killing innocent people, including children  and targeting worshippers at mosques. Such acts are aimed at taking away the country from the path of progress and prosperity, he added.
He asked the sympathizers of Taliban as to what type of Pakistan they wanted to make, because no one could allow such barbaric activities.
He said that the PPP-led government was taking all the stakeholders on board to promote democracy. The country suffered setbacks whenever dictators took over the democratic governments, he added.
He was of the view that all the political parties  should allow democracy to flourish and strengthen it for the betterment of the country.
He said the PPP-led government had strengthened democracy and promoted tolerance and peace in the society.
He said the government took numerous steps for people’s welfare and restored the Constitution. The government extended relief to the salaried class by raising their salaries by 150 percent, he added.
The minister said the federal government had empowered the provinces through 18th Amendment, which would help resolve the problems  of people.
He said the Parliament had been strengthened and made vibrant as   the President had transferred his powers to it.
He said that the PPP was promoting the politics of reconciliation  and taking all the political parties along to effectively handle the challenges.
He said the PPP had taken effective measures to promote  institutions including media and judiciary.
Replying to a question, he rejected the allegations that government institutions were involved in the missing persons issue in Balochistan. All the relevant institutions have submitted undertakings  in the court that no missing person is in their custody, he added.
He said the PPP had taken up the issue of death squad in Balochistan, because the same was not acceptable to it.
Qamar Zaman Kaira  said that tragic incident of Malala Yousafzai has united  different segments of society and isolated those who are in favor of Taliban.
He said that government in consultation with the armed forces took decision of operation  keeping in view law and order situation of that particular area  of the country, adding that “it does not need any excuse  to launch operation.”
He said that the government or armed forces could not fight alone against this extremist mindset and their ideology, adding “civil society and people from all segments of society should stand shoulder to shoulder with the government to eliminate this menace.
The minister said those who are saying that Malala incident will be  used to launch military operation have been exposed to people.
“The nation knows the reality and we have to take decisions in the  light of realities,” he said.
Kaira said time has come to think above the personal interests.
He said nation is proud of armed forces which have sacrificed lives in  the line of duty and rescued people in every and natural disaster.
He appreciated the role of media during Swat operation and now in the backdrop of Malala incident to reunite the people and creating awareness against extremism.
Replying to a question, he said the federal government is fulfilling  its responsibilities to facilitate the people and resolve all issues through dialogue process.
The minister said PPP-led government apologised to the Baloch people for the mistakes committed by previous governments and accepts their demands.
He said sovereignty was given to Balochistan through Constitutional Amendments and resolved issues including gas royalty of the province.
Kaira said several welfare projects including ‘Aghaz-e-Haqooq-e- Balochistan’ were launched and its funds were increased to Rs 140 billion.
He said the federal government has always supported the provincial government of Balochistan in resolving their issues.
He said the government was following a legal procedures to bring  killers of Akbar Bugti to justice and the wounds of Balochistan were gradually healing up.
The minister said the FC was deployed in Balochistan on the request of provincial government.
He said the PPP-led government has taken solid steps for making independent Election Commission according to the Constitution of Pakistan.
He said all the political parties should support government to ensure free, fair  and transparent elections in the country, so that people can get their real representatives. –APP
